Reclaiming the Dungaree

Dungarees were once a defining silhouette of the late 90s and early 2000s — playful, casual, slightly tomboyish. Over time,
they became overly nostalgic, then mass-commercial, and eventually fell out of fashion due to their bulky, childlike
proportions.
This piece strips the dungaree of its innocence and rebuilds it with intention.
Instead of oversized denim and heavy hardware, the fabric is refined and tailored. The pleated mini silhouette transforms
what was once utility wear into something flirtatious and sculpted. The side cut-outs remove the traditional coverage
associated with classic overalls, introducing controlled sensuality.
The single-strap structure feels asymmetric and deliberate — less farm-core, more fashion-forward minimalism. The skirt is
no longer functional first — it’s aesthetic first.
The grey tone keeps it grounded and mature, distancing it from cartoonish Y2K revival. It feels urban, clean, almost
architectural.
This isn’t bringing dungarees back as they were.
It’s deconstructing them and rebuilding them for a woman who doesn’t want nostalgia — she wants reinterpretation.
